A race which I had registered much earlier before the Penang 12 hours walk was confirmed.

A fortnight before the event, Afiqah wanted to join her school field trip to Malacca. Naturally, Akmal was not too happy with her decision. In fact, on the event day, he threatened his mom to run and be disqualified! I thought let it be. He wanted to join during the 2nd circuit – attracted by the beeping sound of the chip. Luckily his mood was good when he reached the venue. Happily following me to report for the event.

I hardly had time for warming up. In fact, the first round which was quite fast was my warming up session. Surprisingly, those elite walkers were having their warm up too! That is the only lap which I was not left behind too far from them - 50m!

Left biting the dust after 3 laps

I think I did better because I was more relaxed. I did not go for my personal best. I just want to complete the race as my warm up for the 6th Penang International 12 Hours Walk later at night. I should not strain my muscles as I had intended to do at least 70 laps in Penang.

My student - Cheng Jun Wen 4th in Category boys under 18 with the time of 18:54

I tried to catch my student when he was on the track. I found it hard to catch him as my speed was not far better than his. With the advantage of age on his side, it is just a matter of time for him to outwalk me in the near future.

I had done an extra lap because my friend, Mr Suresh had miscalculated and I was not too sure if it was an extra lap as I was too tired to concentrate counting! I checked my watch and I did go for an extra lap. Suresh realized that only after I had completed that flying lap. Good sign for the 12 hours walk. No hard feelings on Mr Suresh... ok for training for the gruelling 12 hours walk later.

I took a longer time on lap 11 and 21 due to pit stop - could reduce 5 seconds at each stop if I had assisstance. Using a cup would be easier to take a gulp of water rather than from a mineral bottle as I took time to flow out form the bottle and I had to place the bottle with out going forward.

Akmal Cheah at the start
