The Trikidz is back

Big task for UM students
By NG WEI LOON

UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) has been given the responsibility to organise the TriKidz triathlon clinic and competition on March 21-22.

Stephanie Chok, an International Triathlon Union (ITU) qualified coach, said the sports science students would be putting their theoretical knowledge in running the event.

"The second and third-year undergraduates have been given the task to host the race as part of the event management course.

"Lecturer Dr Nadhratul Wardah Salman was impressed with the event when we organised the third and final leg of the competition at the sports centre last year. She felt that it would be a good learning curve for the students to take up the challenge to manage the meet." added Chok, a three winner of the National Triathlete of the Year award.

A total of 80 students will be part of the two-day programme to promote triathlon at grassroots level with the support from Triathlon Association of Malaysia.

The group’s leader, Mohd Hafiz Zainon, said they were eager to be part of a meaningful initiative.

"Several of us served as volunteers during the last meet but we will be taking full responsibility to organise the event this year."

"We are determined to put on a good show. We will apply the guidelines to ensure that we do not compromise on the children’s safety."

"Everyone in the group has been assigned their respective roles. We are required to submit our weekly report to our lecturer," said the 23-year-old Hafiz.

The organisers are expecting 200 competitors to feature in five sections — six years, seven to eight years, nine to 10 years, 11 to 12 years and 13 to 15 years. There will be separate section for boys and girls if there are more than five girls competing in the nine to 10 years, 11 to 12 years and 13 to 15 years age categories.

Chok will be leading a group of trainers to educate the beginners on four aspects — swimming, cycling, running and transition — on the eve of the race day.

The next legs will be held at Cyberjaya (June 27 -28), Membakut, Sabah (July), Johor Baru (November) and Putrajaya (December).

Entry fee is RM50 for each participant. For details, visit www.trikidzmalaysia.blogspot.com or call 014-225 0290 (Hairul Azwar Hashim).
