PENANG Eco-Challenge, an ad-venture race targeting partici-pants worldwide will be held for the first time in Penang next month. The two-day event from July 28 jointly organised by the Penang Municipal Council and Knights of The Round Table Club (KOTRT) aims to attract 50 teams, including locals from Johor, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur.

Council secretary Ooi Chin Loo said mountain biking, trail running, water sports and physical challenge activities, like rock climbing were among the activities lined up for the adventure race.

He said mountain biking would cover Pulau Betong, Bukit Gen-ting, Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul.

Water sports events will be held at Pulau Betong coastal area while trail running will be held at Gertak Sanggul and the coastal area of Pulau Betong. The adventure race is organised in conjunction with 50th Merdeka anniversary and Visit Malaysia 2007.

"We hope to get Finance Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Seri Dr Helmi Yahaya to flag off the race," he told a press conference at the launching of the logo for the adventure race by Youth, Sports, Women Develop-ment and Community Committee chairman Datuk Jahara Hamid recently.

The entry fee for the race is RM120 for a three-member team. It covers one night accommodation, welcome breakfast, lunch, dinner and medal. The top five prizes are RM2,000, RM1,000, RM500, RM300 and RM200. Medals will be given to those who complete the race. Fifty teams are expected to take part in the race.

Ooi also said the council was promoting its Clean, Active, Sporty and Healthy (or CASH) campaign with more programmes in the pipeline.
