National junior cyclist Safwan dies in bike accident

PETALING JAYA: National junior cyclist Safwan Sawai passed away at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar in Seremban yesterday morning.

The 19-year-old, who is from Sungai Petani, suffered head injuries in a motorcycle crash in Seremban on Saturday evening. He was the pillion rider on the motorcycle driven by 19-year-old Negri Sembilan cyclist Khairul Naim Azhar.

Safwan was named in the national development team after winning the individual road race gold medal for Kedah in Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Alor Star last year. He represented Malaysia in his first major international assignment at the Tour of Langkawi championships early this year.

He was also in the road race team for the Asian Championships in Nakhon Ratchasima in September.

Safwan was not selected for the SEA Games in Korat but he was supposed to report for the training camp at the National Sports Council for next year's Tour of Langkawi.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan was saddened by news of the passing of Safwai.

"This is a sad development because we have lost a young national athlete." he said.

The OCM will donate RM1,000 to Safwan's family.
