Inaugural Pacer Assessment Trials Raises The Bar For KLSCM 2020 Pacer Team

Have you ever used the services of a Pacer in a distance running event? Was it because you wanted to finish at a certain time or because you needed the encouragement, motivation and advice that an experienced Pacer could provide? Those are usually the main reasons why runners decide to follow a Pacer during an event but collectively, the Pacing team of a particular event play a significant role in getting as many runners as possible to achieve their finishing time goals. Pacers also perform an unofficial role as ambassadors and advocates of the event.

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) began its Pacer programme in 2010 with the intention of raising the quality of the event, and it has grown to become a crucial ingredient of KLSCM ever since. Becoming a Pacer for the premier distance running event in Malaysia is a serious responsibility so this year, Dirigo Events, the owner and organizer of KLSCM, decided to invite and conduct open trials for all those harbouring aspirations to be a Pacer.

Out of an initial 247 applications, 116 runners were shortlisted for the Trials which took place over two consecutive Sundays. Both sessions were held over a 1km loop at the LHDN offices in Jalan Duta. The candidates were required to run consistently timed loops without the aid of watches or any electronic devices. The intention was to get the candidates to run by “feel” as consistently as they could, with the Half Marathon hopefuls doing 10 loops while those trying for the Full Marathon had to complete 18 loops.

“For the 12th edition of KLSCM, we felt we needed to freshen up our Pacer Team with some new blood and so we decided to conduct the Open Trials,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events. “The response was great and we had some really good performances over the two Sundays, which gives us a bit of a headache to select the best participants. But that was a nice problem to have,” added Biemans.

Biemans and the Dirigo Team have now analysed all the results and have come to the difficult decision of selecting 30 Pacers for KLSCM 2020. 45,000 Runners Expected at Dataran Merdeka Over Race Weekend

Kuala Lumpur, Thursday: The 12th edition of premier distance running event, the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM), which takes place on 13 and 14 June 2020 at Dataran Merdeka has sold outpublic registrations for all available categoriesin a record seven (7) hours. This was despite Dirigo Events, the owner and organiser of KLSCM, introducing specificnew criteria for its priority registrations that allowed for more race entries to be made available for the public registrations.

These criteria included either having participated in KLSCM at least five times previously or having recorded competitive finishing times in their preferred category in either of the last two years of KLSCM. For example, male runners were only eligible for priority registrations if they had recorded a sub-4 hour timing for a Full Marathon, or sub-2 hour timing for the Half Marathon and sub-1 hour timing for the 10km category. For women it was sub-5 hours for the Full Marathon, sub-2:15 hours for the Half Marathon and sub-1:15 hours for the 10kmcategory.


KLSCM2019 Full Marathon Start

The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon has been growing its capacity year-on-year, with the expanded two-day format introduced a couple of years ago allowing the event to hit a record 40,000 participants in last year’s edition. The event has been largely oversubscribed in recent years and to increase capacity, the two-day format was implemented by having the Kids Dash and 5kmcategories on the first day and the 10km, Full and Half Marathon categories the following day. This year however, the 10km category will also be held on the first day.

“We reached our 35,000 capacity as a one-day event in 2016, and are extremely thankful to DBKL for allowing us to expand into a two-day format a couple of years ago, and with the 10km category also held on the first day this year, we are be able to increase our capacity over the Race Weekend to 45,000 runners,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM and Director of Dirigo Events. “This year being Visit Malaysia Year 2020, we are also optimistic that the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon 2020 will play a significant part in bringing the required number of tourists to Malaysia and make Visit Malaysia Year a resounding success,” said Biemans.

“We are extremely grateful for the strong following of our event so much so that despite increasing our total capacity, together with that for the public registrations, we still managed to sell out the whole event in seven (7) hours,” said Biemans. “Our focus now is to work hard to deliver the best possible race experience to all those who have successfully registered their participation”, he added.

The increased capacity however brings its own set of challenges to play, and the organisers have had to tweak certain elements of the event to ensure that all runners have the best possible race experience. Due to the 10km category also being held on Saturday, 13 June this year, the Friendship Run has had to be cancelled because of logistical complications. The 3km Kids Dash category (10-12 years old) will also be shortened to 2km this year to accommodate the larger number of runners on the first day. Children who are 12 years old however, can also opt to take part in the 5km category if the shortened 2km route is not challenging enough for them.

After the priority registration period, the remaining race slots were opened to the public today and was based on a first come first served basis. Apart from the priority and public registrations, there are other pathways to participation, primarily involving the charity initiatives of KLSCM. Good Samaritan runners who believe in the power of running as a force for good, can also participate in KLSCM 2020 under its Run For A Reason (RFAR) and Corporate Challenge programmes. Runners who register here will need to purchase a slot from one of KLSCM’s charity beneficiaries and then begin raising funds for that charity.

This year will see the introduction of two new charity beneficiaries to complement the existing three. Futuremakers by Standard Chartered and Teach For Malaysia will be joining Hospis Malaysia, National Cancer Society of Malaysia and Dignity For Children Foundationas part of the KLSCM family.

“We’re delighted to introduce Futuremakers and Teach For Malaysia into our fold as they have been doing amazing things for the betterment of society,” said Biemans. “Together with our existing beneficiaries, we hope to be able to exceed our record haul of RM890,000 last year and breach the RM1 million this year,” addedBiemans. “That amount of money can certainly make a difference in so many lives and we highly encourage the Malaysian running community to do all they can to achieve this,” he continued.

The award-winning Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon has grown to become the premier running event in Malaysia that draws thousands of local and international runners to the country whilst firmly establishing Malaysia in the global running calendar. The 12th edition of the event will be the largest yet with 45,000 runners in total taking part, and will once again see sponsorship from Title Sponsor Standard Chartered Malaysia, along with Under Armour, 100 Plus, Seiko, TudungPeople and Banana Boat, and with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) as venue host.

Standard Chartered Extends Kl Marathon Title Sponsorship

Malaysia’s premier distance running event will see bank at the helm till 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 November 2018: Dirigo Events and Standard Chartered Malaysia are pleased to announce a four-year extension to their title sponsorship agreement, taking the Bank’s partnership with the Standard Chartered KL Marathon through year 2022. The 2019 edition of the highly anticipated event will take place on 28 and 29 September and is expected to draw over 38,000 participants.

Standard Chartered has been the title sponsor of the event since 2009 and celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the bank’s involvement at this year’s event in April. The Standard Chartered KL Marathon’s (SCKLM) 10th Anniversary saw its biggest participation yet with 38,000 participants competing in 10km, Half and Full Marathon distances, with a 5km Fun Run and 1km and 3km Kids categories. The 10th Anniversary event also saw SCKLM being held over two days for the first time to cater to the growing number of runners, and this will continue in the next edition of the race.

More than 35,000 runners to receive Brooks race T’s

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 March 2017: The Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM) 2017 Pacers will be clad in official apparel sponsor Brooks gear and will be highly visible in luminous yellow tops. A total of 30 runners received their Pacer kits at a handover ceremony that also saw the official opening of the Brooks concept store at brand new mall, MyTown in Cheras.

Pacers received their exclusively designed Brooks singlets with Equilibrium Technology, along with a pair of running shorts and shoes. There will be 24 Pacers assisting runners in the Full Marathon category and for the first time, there will also be another 6 Pacers for the Half Marathon category.

Pacing is a crucial element if you want to complete a marathon in your expected time and Pacers play an important role in helping to ensure runners keep to the required pace.
