Report: Olympic Day Run 2008

By Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap

Date: 29 June 2008
Time: 7.30 a.m.
Venue: Dataran Merdeka

I was not a participant in this event but on duty as a finisher official for Category C - Men's Veteran.

Today is certainly not a memorable day for me. For the first time being an official since 1988 I was being shouted "STUPID". I think the woman who shouted at me was quite right. She must have been very SMART because she did not do as others would do. There would be only one inventor of an item in the world or one leader in a group, community or country. They are different from the rest and that make them outstanding.

I was busy looking out for Category C finisher and writing their bib number on the finishing card when this woman came and asking which funnel she should go! She was going zig-zagged and shouted STUPID when she found her funnel.

Normal runners could have seen the and read the category on the banner as far as 30 metres before the finishing line. In fact, McDonald's had a higher standard. Normally, the banner would have the Category Letter as well, A, B, C and so on. This time the categories were spelt out - Men's Open, Women's Open, etc. Any literate runner with normal eyesight would have no problem finding their way. I must say that occasionally, I did come across runners who were not not sure of their funnel but they would signal their doubt much further before the finsihing line and not right at the funnel!

Anyway, I felt happy when I left the venue because there were more runners who appreciated my task. A simple smile and 'Thank you' would go a long way.

Report 7th Johor Masters Open Athletic Championships

By Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap

Venue: Larkin Stadium, Johor Bahru
Date: 21 - 22 June 2008

I reached the stadium at around five minutes past seven, feeling excited. This is the first time for me competing in Johor. I collected my bib and got ready to warm up. I overheard some of the competitors saying that the first event would be the 3km walk. I thought they had got it wrong. To my horror, I was wrong!

The 5km event was scheduled on 22 June. I had planned to return to KL around noon on 21 June. I asked the team manager if I could take part in the 3km instead. Luckily for me the meet manager admit that they had made some changes. So I got to take part in the 3km without a penalty - RM10 for late payment on top of RM10 per event!

I did not expect the event to begin at 7.30 sharp as even in KL, the earliest would be close to 8.00 a.m. We were called to the starting line at around 8.20. That was almost a delay of an hour.

I had a good start, to be within the top 10 for all categories when we crossed the finishing line to complete 200 metres. However, my position dropped quickly as the race progressed. After 300 metres, my stamina let me down again. I could not keep up with the pace. I was out of the podium position by the time we completed 600 metres.

I tried hard to be consistant as my earlier target was to finish the 5km race below 30 minutes. It should be easier to have achieve the 6mins per km pace in 3km but that did not materialize. I did not know my offficial position or my time when the official results were announced. Quite frustrated as the organizer could have done better.

The first unusual thing was that participants need not report for the event. The second unusual thing was that the starter did not check the start list. Those two procedures would not be missed by FTAAA officials no matter how late the event would begin or how few their officials were! It was not a surprise when I saw the official result list – only competitors name and number with no timing! Only top three competitors were stated!

I wonder if it was a subtle message to tell those who had failed to finish on the podium that their participation was a waste of the official's time to make a record on the official result, a waste of time for the lap recorder and a waste of time for the time keepers.

My own timing with my stop watch:
0200m - 01:04 1:04
0600m - 03:31 2:27
1000m - 06:09 2:38
1400m - 08:46 2:37
1800m - 11:25 2:39
2200m - 13:58 2:33
2600m - 16:31 2:33
3000m - 19:03 2:31

It is very tough to compete in the 40-44 age group as most of the competitors are very seasoned. There is little hope to finish on podium if one cannot walk at least 6mins per km. That is 2:24 per lap. I was well off the pace except the opening 200m. However, I was satisfied with my performance because I managed to keep my time close to 2:30.

Report Ipoh Starwalk 2008

By Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap

Venue: Stadium Indera Mulia, Ipoh
Date: 15 June 2008 (Sunday)
Time: 7 a.m.
Distance: 10km

I woke up at 5 a.m. After such along time, without the help of the alarm clock. However, I was not feeling too fresh. The day before I had woken up at 4 a.m. to fetch my wife's cousin at Hentian Putra and could not sleep after returning home at around half past four. Then went for the Adventure Charity Run and drove to Ipoh. My son woke up at half past twelve and three for milk. Luckily, he slept immediately after feeding, allowing me to continue my sleep.

I left the Merloon Hotel at 6 and pick up my FTAAA counterpart and with the help of Mr Naidu, we made our way to the stadium. We proceeded to the place where competition walkers were assembled. Most of the participants became restless when they were still being kept in the stadium at a quarter past seven. I guessed the flag off was a little more than half past seven. It had not happened for Ipoh Starwalk since its inception in 2004.

I had a good position for the start - beginning on the third row. Like usual, I was way behind immediately after flagging off. However, I was quite lucky because the heave traffic did not really obstruct me. I thought I did quite well as i caught up with most of the familiar faces.

When I looked at my watch, I had actually pressed it twice! So no time to indicate how I had been doing. I ran out of steam after about half an hour. Could not longer chase the participants in front but fortunately could maintain my position. However, towards the end, I could not hold my position. Anyway, those who overtook me were not from my C category so it did not affect my postion. I ended up 7th with the time of 1hr 03mins 39 secs.

Actually I was disappointed as I had aimed for a sub 60 mins finish. I could have made it if I were a bit lucky. The last two days of my preparation was disrupted because I had to take my van for service. I did not expect that it would be a whole day event! So no training on Thursday and on Friday, UM swimming pool was not available - only for women! I had overlooked the schedule. I had done 1hr 03mins 49secs for 10.5km on Wednesday and was on course for a sub 1hr because the distance for the race is slightly less than 10km. Yu Song was 4th in 58mins 49secs. Looking forward for the Penang Starwalk to give him a run for his money.

Penang Bridge Marathon 2008? - II

Raising funds for marathon

GEORGE TOWN: The state govern-ment is collecting funds for the Pe-nang Bridge marathon as it is confident that it will get the nod from Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd (PBSB) to run the event.

State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said he did not foresee any reason for PBSB to stop the state from taking over the event.

“The Public Works Department (JKR) and the Tourism Ministry have agreed with us and we are currently waiting for PBSB to give us the green light,” he said.

Law was speaking at a press conference to announce A Cultural Charity Night with Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

The dinner will be held in conjunction with Abdul Rahman's birthday at at Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) in Relau at 7.30pm on July 9.

He said the function was to raise funds for the TYT Disaster Relief Fund, charity organisations, the 6th International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship, which the state was hosting from July 31 to Aug 4, and the Penang Bridge marathon.

Those keen to buy the RM30 tickets can contact Lina at 04-6505136, DAP headquarter at 04-2288482 or Jeffery from PISA at 04-6451934.

Adventure Charity Run for ROLF Report - Blue Ribbon Campaign

By Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap

Date: 14 June 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 6.00 a.m.
Venue: INTI International University College (Nilai Campus)

This is another event where I don't put high hopes on finishing in a good position but rather giving a good performance. I started from pole, meaning I would be competitive for this event. I only noticed Mr Tee Teck Bee, my FTAAA acquaintance who has been consistently faser than me.

I thought I might have a chance to finish on the podium. After flagged off, I found myself in 5th position. The walkers were more than 300 meters ahead within half a minute! Mr Tee was hot on my heels. It was amazing to see their blistering speed. Some might claimed that they walked so fast that it looked like running which I had to agree.

If there were MAAU selection officials were there, they would make no mistake in picking them to represent Malaysia and I bet they would have won the gold medal easily at Asian Games level. I doubt if Mr Teoh Boon Lim, Mr Khoo Chong Beng or Mr V. Subramanian (when both the latter were on their heyday) could even challenge the fastest walker in the event.

Anyway, once Mr Tee caught up with me, I encouraged him to go faster as he had the pace to match the others. I managed to overtake one walker only. I thought I could make some grounds as the race progressed. How wrong was I, they were very strong walkers. I ended the race with 5th position. I guessed the 4th winner was more than 500 metres ahead as I could not see him.

A China Daily journalist interviewed me regarding the event. She spoke in Mandarin and I told her I don't speak Mandarin. So we converse in English and finally she requested me to speak in Bahasa Melayu. I guess that is the whole idea of making Bahasa Melayu as the national language.

I had a pleasant surprise when a sweet girl approached me asking if I am still teaching in SMK Taman Desa. She was my former Form 2 student. I could not recall her name. Her voice is familiar but her look has changed - prettier. Surely I remember who she was when she told me her name. An avid reader who read an average of 5 books a week!

I hope to give another good performance tomorrow in one of my favourite events - Ipoh Starwalk. Judging from today's 'warm up session' I should be able to be competitive.

Penang Bridge Marathon 2008?

Penang Govt to take over bridge marathon
By PRISCILLA DIELENBERG

GEORGE TOWN: The state government is planning to take over the organising of the Penang Bridge Marathon this year following its cancellation by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).

State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the state had sought permission from the LLM to hold the event.

"We have yet to fix the date as we need to liaise with the International Marathon Council first so that it won't clash with other events," he said Friday.

Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Mohamad Razali Othman had on May 11 announced that the run was cancelled due to financial and manpower constraints.

A week later, Law told reporters that Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said expressed her disappointment with the cancellation of the event, as it had been successful in attracting both local and foreign participants in past years.

Law was speaking at a press conference to announce the sponsorship of A Cultural Charity Night with Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas in conjunction with the governor's birthday.

He said E&O Penang and Hunza Properties (Penang) Sdn Bhd were each sponsoring RM300,000 for the event, organised by Taglink Group.

He said the state hoped to raise RM2mil in aid of the TYT Disaster Relief Fund, several charity organisations, the 6th International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship (IDBF CCWC) to be held in the state from July 31 to Aug 4, and the Penang Bridge Marathon.
