Report: Ipoh Starwalk 2011

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 19 June 2011 | Sunday | 7:00am
Venue: Stadium Indera Mulia, Ipoh, Perak
Distance:10km
Category: C ( 40 years and above and below 50 )
Position: 13
Time: 1:07:35

Second time unlucky in a row - 13! Anyway the time was slightly better than last year.

Consider that my foot was still hurt - no idea what the cause was, it was a good performance.

I had a good pace up to the 23rd minute where Lim Thean Seng was just about 20 metres ahead. Kept following him until the 48th minute and overtook him briefly. Less than 10 seconds perhaps, and was left by him again.

It was quite frustrating as I was dealing with fitness and the discomfort caused by the pain on my foot.

I was a little irritated 100m towards the finishing line when a competitor who failed to overtake me told me that I was running! I replied angrily

"Mesti lari kalau mau menang!"

He tried two more times to overtake me but I stepped up my pace. He was very mad that he did not even look at me when I extended my hand! I would be going for the JDP 2nd and 3rd Circuit in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian Masters Open in Alor Setar to reconfirm that I need not run to get better results.

I am not likely to be the winner because others are much faster - better techniques. And yes, they need not run either. I do not earn a living in racewalking. It's just my passion to racewalk and I'll abide by the racewalking rules - no knee bending and floating, let alone running!

Report: Larian Perpaduan 2011

Date: 11 June 2011
Venue: Taman Lembah Bujang, Merbok
Distance: 3km. 14.38. 1st
Jasmin: 3km. 1st
Alauddin: 3km. Finisher.

Organised by KRT (Kawasan Rukun Tetangga) Lembah Bujang, Merbok. I was informed by my office-mate who is KRT member. Located opposite MRSM Lembah Bujang, it took us 10 mins drive from my home. Offered 3 categories for each gender. 10~12yrs, 13~18yrs and 18ys above - men and women.

It's a kampung event. Not many kakis. Mostly the participants were local taman kids and kampung nearby. Alauddin and Jasmin decide to join me in 5km run after I racun them with winning prize :) Sometimes they need a little motivation

Before the event started my friend mention that Jasmin could not run because of under age. She is 8 but the category was for 10~12yrs. Actually he worried about kids below 10yrs having difficultly to finish the 5km run - I said, I will handle her later and took full responsibility on my kids.

As usual, I'm left behind after flag-off. Lambat pick-up :P After 1km running in Taman houses, I chasing 4 kids in front of me. Slowly I overtook them and lead into kampung mini-tar road.

The running route sign were well placed along the kampung. I thinks kids having no problem to reach the finish line. Furthermore most of kids were locals. I finished in 14.38mins. Not 5km. It is 3±km, I ran back to Alauddin + Jasmin and pace with them to finish line. Jasmin won. She was first girl crossed the finish line.

Later, after discussion with my friend and KRT committee. They agreed and let Jasmin received the winning prize - Thanks. Yang penting halal.

This year, it is a non-competitive event. The competition is on fancydress with the theme of "I Love My Joints".

Along the way, lucky participants were given 'goodies'. My student was lucky enough to get a voucher sponsored by Silver Bird, RM40 voucher to visit High 5 Bread Town.

Lucky prizes were great... 20 quantum science pendants were among them.

It was a good outing for me although I was not fast enough. I think I won't be able to finish within top ten in Ipoh Starwalk on 19 June. Based on my performance, I would be doing 67 minutes in Ipoh. Only a fighting chance to be in 11-20 finishers where no medals were awarded!

The games were entertaining. Generally, the participants had a whale of a time at the event.

Looking forward to support next year. Hopefully FTAAA would be called for technical assistance to make it a competitive event.

Report: Race Against Time: Run For Life

Date: 5 June 2011 | Sunday
Venue: Batu Feringgi, Penang
Distance: 6km
Time: 42.23min – 10th

Still on school holiday. Second week of 2. Last week we went to Hatyai Marathon. This week we went back to my kampung - Sungai. Bakap. Jumpa orang-tua. Lama tak balik. Rindu. I brought kids to enjoy kampung lifestyle. Turun mandi sungai. sauk ikan, udang, tangkap ikan semilai, main tuju dengan tanah liat. Then petang, we ride gerek (bicycle) pusing-pusing kampung.

That were some of kampung activities I trying to menurun to my kids. Taman house in Bedong... tarak all those things. Even kayuh gerek around taman pon, kena supervise.

Earlier I registered only myself. After back from Hatyai Marathon, Jasmin who finished 4km fun run ahead of her brother wanted more. I thanked Alex Ong on registration and tee+bib pick-up for me and Jasmin. But unfortunately Jasmin had pull back because of leg injuries - Jatuh gerek petang kelmarin

Anyway.. It was Sunday. Morning. Coti. Penang. Batu Feringgi. Beach. Kids. Running - Perfect getaway!

This time my running adventure continues on the beach. The same running route as i join in 2007. But this time different organizer - Malaysian Society of Transplantation with Ministry of Health. They promote and seeking an organ donors.

The route shorten than 2007. But they extend the sandy part, 200~300 meter further from Rasa Sayang Resort Hotel. So running on beach probably 800m then on tarmac until Spice Garden and U-turn. Total distance 6km including 1.6km on sandy beach.

Bang! - Flag-off.

Argghh.. running on beach, can't ran faster and your shoes sinking in the sand. Half way I ran beside Alex.

"Pundek hang Alex, hang buat apa tang sini.."
"Aku tak boleh lari laarr.."

For the first time I sayur Alex. But only two steps. Then makan pasir.

On tarmac, I ran with a sharp and strong lady. I guess she is triathlete. She ran like a star. Waving hands, gave a running pose on friends camera. Pom-pom other women. We kept on racing each other. Road is rolling and sharp corners. Need extra careful.

U-turn until beach, still running with her. On the beach.. yeah! I won :) But the real is I'm racing with myself. I won't give-up for walking. I kept running even pasiq sedut my both shoes. Melelong. Tercugap-cugap crossing the finish line. At the end I found that lady was a champ in her own category - thanks, allow me pacing.

Frankly, I would say this Beach Run is rocks! I love it. I love the course = tarmac + sandy. It test runners limit. I would recommend PAAA organise it annually likes Round Island, Round Relay, City Run and Tanjong 10k. These are unique events that offer different road course.

...with finisher medals, top5 trophy, Brooks dry fit t-shirt, free Milo, free Nestle cereal and attractive lucky draw prizes - I gave 4 star!

The official result is here.

Looking forward next year.
