Report: Pulau Perhentian Island Challenge 2011

By Aiman Cheah

Venue: Pulau Perhentian Kecil
Date: 15 October 2011 | 11am
Category: Novice Men
Distance: about 14km
Position: 66th
Organizer: Terengganu State Government and Tourism Terengganu
Event managed by: Perhentian Island Challenge Advetures Sdn Bhd

I had wanted to go there as a volunteer in 2009 but unable to do so. I almost joined the event last year but the replacement class on Saturday made me change my mind. So after two years, I finally made it. Yes, finally made it as I almost died in the event.......

I reached MaTiC, Jalan Ampang at around 10.30 p.m. as the buses were scheduled to leave at 11.00 p.m. However, I think we left much later.

With fellow Chap Ayam Runners While Waiting for the driver.

It was good to get to know Yum, the photographer. It was sort of a priviledge to run with a runner of his stature although he is very humble. "Budak baru belajar belajar konon".

Breakfast at Kuala Besut

The boat ride to Pulau Perhentian Island is not for the faint hearted or those with back problem. It only took about 15 minutes to reach the island.

The boat ride to Pulau Perhentian

I was lucky as I met my fellow countryman, Mr Koh who offered me to share the tent with him. We settled down after we got our tent. He also made arrangement for a snorkeling trip. It was only RM30. I enjoyed the trip but took some time to adjust to snorkeling. I did not spot any turtle or shark because I was a little too slow.

Many in the groups managed to spot those marine creatures. The corals and fishes were awesome. No wonder many of those in MNS are hooked to scuba diving...... If I had $$$ I would certainly join them too. It is amazing to swim among those colourful fishes. They are close to you but you can never catch them.

I felt a little feverish after the snorkeling trip. It got worse the next morning. I was thinking whether to run or just pull out of the race. In the end, I decided to give it a try. Well, if I felt bad, I could always abandon the race. I refilled with bottle with just about 300ml of water and took along a piece of pancake. It was more of a picnic plan rather than a competitive race! I did brisk walking when the race started.

Then, jogged as I was left by the crowd. I caught up with them when they could not find the route! As I sweat, I felt better. I began to overtake other participants. Had a gulp of drink after every 10 minutes or so. By half an hour, I had run out of water. Since there were many ascending parts, I decided to walk to prevent myself from sweating and losing more water.

OMG! I thought I could have died before reaching the first water station.

Never in my previous race, the first water station is that far. I think I took close to 2 hours to the that water station and almost gave up there! I took 3 glasses of Gatorade and 2 glasses of mineral water. The pancake was a real help. Quite famish too! I rested about 5 minutes. Took another glass of Gatorade and mineral water before I continued.

3 kampung participants had called it a day. I could no longer run. So, I just walked and walked and walked. I find the trail was much easier or was it because I felt better that drinking that much of water?

The view at the windmill was superb. The stairs were not as killing as those in Menara KL.

Finishing... just like a champion but actually 11th from the back!

May want to have another go in future if I have the opportunity. The organizer need to improve a little bit. Imagine leaving Kuala Besut for KL at 1.15pm, when the schedule was at 10.30 a.m. One of the bus driver said he won't drive until he got his allowance paid! Participants were no longer important after being used in the event?

Organizer was laughing all the way to the bank after the prize giving ceremony. The state government invested RM200,000 for the event. With that sum of money, I believe the event company can do a more decent job.

Report: Larian Amal Kesihatan Seimbang: Fizikal & Mental

Date: 15 October 2011 | Saturday | 7:00am
Venue: Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani, Kedah
Distance: 10km

The event was collaboration between Hospital Sultan Sungai Petani and Sungai Petani Hash Hash Harrier running group. Not attractive category offered. Only 4 - Men, Women, Boys and Girls. Quite tough for Junior veteran like me. At least they should divide into 3 - Men Junior, Men Open and Men Veteran. Same goes to Women. So I opt to run as fun/syiok2 after Fansuri decide to join me in stroller.

In registration form said started at 7am. But I know any government's event will start behind schedule. Aerobic exercise and opening speech is a must. And worst thing was the VIP come late and gave long campaign speech. But luckily not Datuk Mukhriz, the Kubang Pasu MP. Brief speech, rasmi and trus kasi flag-off at 8am.

With Fansuri in stroller, we start late from behind. Let the others speed-up. Slowly I sayur them on hilly route to SP-AS main road. Some of them say hi to Suri. @2km thru Taman Ria houses, I ran comfortably. Not much runners blocking and less traffic. Along Taman Ria route there were alot of stalls serving breakfast so I think we entertained them while having teh tarik and roti canai.

Cikgu was waiting us somewhere in 2km after starting to check on Fansuri. She is happy. Talkative as usual. Cikgu passed her kuih pau. Great. At least I could focus on the run. Finish quickly as possible. While she having breakfast.

Pau anyone?

Turning left to Jalan Kelab Cinta Sayang, the traffic was busy. I had to be careful and asking for a lane from motorist when passing the 4 junction of traffic light - Thanks.

Running straight passing Kelab Cinta Sayang Resort, again Cikgu in the car and Jasmin with camera waiting @3km to finish line. Jasmin wearing jogging suit. So I persuade her to join. 2 of us + Fansuri ran together slowly until finish line in-front of Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim.

Official result is here.

A few basic things I would like to comments..
1. Participants should given bib# or at least piece of color cloth to differentiate the category
2. Please no compulsory event t'shirt or disqualified those not wearing. I received S size after registered. Too small. Just keep inside stroller incase I finish in top place :)
3. Adult should divide into two categories - Open and veteran.

Report: 6th Penang International 12 Hours Walk

By Aiman Cheah

Venue: Esplanade, Penang
Date: 8-9 October 2011
Time: 8.00p.m. - 8.00 a.m.
Category: Men Junior Veteran
Distance Covered: 51 laps or 54.978km
Position: 12th
Organiser: Penang Veteran Athletes Association and MMK Belia Dan Sukan Pulau Pinang

I was quite confident of doing around 70 laps despite inadequate training. I did 21km on Thursday and felt good. 8.4km and took a break to fetch my son. Continued with 6.3km and break before Maghrib and continued for another 6.3km after prayers. That was my only long distance walk and the JDP was quite of a help too. So far as there was no sore muscle....indication is good.

Missed the bus at Pudu Central....bus left earlier than scheduled. When I took a taxi to Hentian Duta, the bus was already there at 11.12a.m. Only 4 passengers and I believe they boarded from Pudu Central.

"Passed out" once in the bus as I was having sleeping debt. Need to be fresh as I wouldn't be sleeping through out the night.

I was surprised that there were not many participants despite the inclusion of boys and girls categories. The event used to attract more than 400 participants. Well, no complaint of having less participants - less congestion for the first few laps, easier access for toilet and food.

Glad to see Yu Song and Mr Chin Phoay Foon. Only see him in this event. It has been 4 years since I last see Mr Chin.

With Yu Song and her daughter

The first 2 hours was good as I was on target for the 70 laps. Took power gel after the first hour. Took a gulp of water every 3 laps. After I hour and a half, felt hungry. Stopped for banana and sandwich almost every lap. Muscles still felt good.

The next two hours were challenging. The rain was somewhat a blessing in disguise earlier. My shirt was very smelly. Almost vommitted when I rubbed my nose against my shoulder. Thought the rain would wash away the smell and any way, I needed to change my clothes.

The strategy was to stay in the rain till the rain stop. Unfortunately the rain did not seem to stop and Mr Chin put it nicely when I asked him how long would it normally rain in Penang. Indefinately! Yes, he was right. It rained until the event was over. Drizzling during the prize giving ceremony and come to a complete stop around noon when I checked out of the motel.

I was forced to stop because I was shivering and I could hardly walk. I decided to pit and changed. Only pair of shoes but another set of clothing. Went out again for 2 laps when it began to drizzle. On the second lap, it starts to pour again and I decided to pit.

Still very eager to continue as I keep myself moving just in case the system jammed! During the break I took the opportunity to eat and rest and eat hoping to be energized and go full trottle to do the catching up. But it was a fat hope. Dropped from jont 5th placing in the 4th hours to 17th in 8th hours.

Greeted by Mr Danny Tan while waiting for the rain to stop. We had a good chat and Mr. P.F Chin called it a day because his shoes had protested for any more distance.

With 2 hours 15 minutes left, I thought I better joined the party. The weather was kinder to me.... drizzling and at times it went a little heavy but since my body was already warm and the wind was no longer strong, I no longer felt cold. Others were 'impressed' with my speed. Who couldn't go fast after resting for and a half hours?

I must than Mr Fau Ah Kau for pacing me. I would have missed the final lap because I was getting slower after the 44th lap. He paced with me and both of us did manage to complete before the cut off time.

Hope to return again. The event was well organized except there was no spot light at the mat. Could not read my watch due to dim light. There was no big digital clock to assist participants too.
