Report: Orange Run 2010

By Aiman Cheah

Venue: Piazza, The Curve, Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya
Date: 25 July 2010
Time: 7.15 a.m.
Distance: 11km
Category: Men Junior Veteran

Result: 59minutes 16 seconds

This is the first time I ran together with my students. Surprising, one was much faster than I was. That was good because it had been a long time since I had students who could run faster in road races. I reckoned that he was about 5 minutes ahead of me. Too bad that he did not have a stopwatch.

My bad habits showed up again in this race. I stopped as early as the 5th minutes after catching up with my students. After running for a while, I overtook them but then made another two stops before the 8th minute. Then, I manged to maintain my pace for 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, I stopped again and it was near the first water station. Took two cups of isotonic and began to have a steady pace again. Not along after that I saw Ryan Teoh.

I tried to keep up with him. I was about one minute behind him. I tried to get closer to him and I did get as close as 5 seconds behind him but had to pay the price. Stopped again and by the time I started to run, it was back to about a minute behind him.

Before the second and final water station, I was 10 seconds behind him. I was surprise because he took a longer time to stop. I managed to finish my drinks and he had not started to run. I went ahead of him but was sure that he would overtake me again because I had not been faster than him for more than two years! I admire his steady pace and at times strong finishing.

I managed to complete the race in 59:16, ahead of more established runners like my former team-mates - Kevin Chow and Kelvin Ng. I think they just went easy because all have been much faster in previous races.

Actually, I would have preferred to be at Dataran Merdeka for the Islamic Outreach Walk. However, since I have promised my students for the Orange Run, I have to honour that.

Last week, I also missed the Anggerik Walk in Shah Alam - clashed with Siemens Run.

I would have a better chance in both the races but the twist is that I have registered too early for JDP Walk, third circuit which clashes with Olympic Day Run. The latter would be more fun! What a luck.

Report: Siemens Run 2010

By Aiman Cheah

Venue: Dataran Merdeka
Date: 18 July 2010
Time: 7.30 a.m.
Distance: 10km
Category: C - Junior Veteran (40 - 49)

Result
Time: 53:43
Position: 76
Finisher's Medal: 1 - 150

I registered for this race during the early birds period. I thought I would have a chance to get a finisher's medal since there would be 150 medal being offered. Last year, I missed some medals narrowly. To finish within the top 100 would be quite a challenge considering my present form.

Three weeks before the event, I had wanted to go to Perak. Then, I had something else. A week before the event, I offered my bib at early bird rate. There was no taker. Thanked God for that. It was a blessing in disguise as I only came to know I would be free on both Saturday and Sunday morning on Friday evening.

I woke up later than usual because Dataran Merdeka is a familiar venue. I reached there by 7.15 a.m. I quickly went to the baggage counter to leave my bag there. It took almost 10 minutes to get to my turn. As time was running out, I went into the enclosure without any warming up or stretching.

I started the race rather slowly. Not really by choice but because there were many people. It had been a long time since I saw such a big crowd. In fact, even after 10 minutes of running, the runners occupy the whole width of the road and I had to run zig zag.

This is the first road race of the year that I could discipline myself. I only stopped at the water stations. Unfortunately, I was a little distracted by the cheering group. I increased my speed as I thought I would last the distance in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. I walked for a few seconds before started to run again and finally I could sprint towards the finishing line. I was surprised to get a finishing slip indicating 76th. Other runs on the same day must have attracted at least 25 of the better runners in my category.

Generally, I enjoyed the race. There were four water stations which was good for 'fun' runners like me. Elite runners may not need water at all since it is only a 10km race. However, I am quite disappointed with the first three water stations. The volunteers could not cope with the number of runners. The problem could easily be rectified by either putting addtional table(s) or maintaining the same number to tables but increasing one or two volunteers.

Another complains is at the baggage counter. The slip given to us had the serial number. If the bags had been arranged accoring to the serial number, the volunteers would have an easier time to identify the bags instead of asking the owners to identify their bags. I had to wait for almost 10 minutes to get my bag. With only 5 people in front of me, I should have gotten my bag in less than 2 minutes because there were at least 3 people on duty.

Report: Larian 10km Fiesta Muzium Telekom 2010

By Aiman Cheah

Date : 17th July 2010
Venue : Muzium Telekom, Jalan Raja Chulan, KL
Time : 7.30am
Distance : 10km
Category : C (Men Veteran)

I did not plan to run this race until the eleventh hour. I called Mr Naidu to ask if walk in registration was allowed and the answer was not favourable. He asked me to see him anyway. I reached the venue by 6.30 a.m. Put on a thick face and asked the organizer if I could still register. She called her friend to asked and the answer was not to my favour. Since I was there, I had made up my mind to run illegally. But thinking again.......I should not take the drinks provided and I would be 'disturbing' the traffic too. I shall never be an illegal runner in a race.

I was happy when Mr Naidu arrived and told me he had an extra bib. I started from the back.....about 3/4 of the line. This race was suppose to be a training session for Siemens run the following day. I find it more enjoyable to run slowly from the back.... the experience I had last week during Seremban Half Marathon.

I started slowly to warm up but unfortunately the 'engine stalled' as I was going uphill at KL Tower. Walked quite a distance before started to run again. I stopped at all three water stations.

I completed the race in 36:43. I was 14th in my category. The officials were caught 'sleeping' as there was no reaction when I crossed the finishing line. I had to return to get my Category C 14th position slip. I was told that 50 medals were offered in each category. My time certainly showed that the race was under-distance.

Report: 23rd Seremban Half Marathon 2010

By Aiman Cheah

I decided to take part in this event because I had not run the 21 km distance for a long time. The last being Adidas King of the Road last year. The medals offered also are within my reach - 150 for men veteran.

I was not well prepared for this race. Just trying my luck. I only ran 8.4km on Monday and walked 4.2km on Friday. I only targeted a 7 min per km pace.

I reached Seremban by 6.30 a.m. but since I was not familiar, I lost some time looking for parking. I walked towards the starting line but went back to hand in my reporting card thinking that the 21km had not been flagged off yet. I saw Mr. Naidu who asked me to go to the starting point immediately while he helped me to hand in my reporting card.

I was told that the runners had left. So, I ran slowly alone. I was happy to see another late comer. At least, I had a companion. Unfortunately, he was too fast for me. I started to walk just after 2 minutes of running.

Anyway, I was still optimistic to complete the distance. After running again, I saw the last runner - a woman. I guessed she must have started late too. After 5 minutes I saw the last group of runners. Trying to find out how late I started but did not get the answer because the runner did not use a stopwatch.

I came to mineral water stall after 15 minutes of running. I asked one of the runners if there will be water stations ahead and I got good news. There would be water stations at 5th, 10th and 15th km. His stopwatch was 21 minutes. So I had started about 6 minutes late.

I ran a relaxed race. Just hoping to complete the distance within qualifying time. I reached the first water station after 28 minutes, the second water station after 1:03 and the final water station after 1:36.

Problems began to set in after I came to 6km sign. My left calf almost cramp. I gave it a quick massage and continued at a slower pace. I was just hoping to finish the race within 2:30 hours. I took several stops after the roundabout when the 10km runners merged with the 21km runners.

I was happy to complete the race in 2:05:21 in 77th place. The official time would be around 2:12:00.
