News: Fun run for harmony

From TheStar: Metro (North Edition)
Date: 14 October 2008

AIMST University Unity Run and Carnival 2008 will be held for the second consecutive year on Nov 8. About 1,000 participants are expected.

The run, which will be held at the university campus in Semeling, near Sungai Petani in Kedah, is also expected to attract about 3,000 people for various fun activities organised in conjunction with the event.

AIMST University vice-chancellor and chief executive Prof Geoffrey Smith said the run was held to foster unity among the multi-racial participants.

“The event is the university’s way to show that AIMST is run under the concept of equal opportunity, providing a multi-cultural element in all its aspects, including sports events,” he told a press conference at the Semeling campus recently.

Organising chairman Ranjit Singh said that the inaugural event last year attracted 732 participants.

The run, starting at 6.30am from the AIMST sports complex, is divided into seven categories.

They are men’s open (18 to 39 years), men’s junior (40 to 49 years) men’s senior (50 years and above), women’s open (18 to 39 years), women’s veterans (40 years and above), schoolboys (17 years and below) and schoolgirls (17 years and below). The men’s open and junior categories cover a distance of 10km while the rest cover 7km.

The first three winners in all categories will each receive a medal, participation certificate, hotel stay voucher and hamper while those from the fourth to the 20th placing will get a me-dal and participation certificate each.

There will also be a lucky draw offering 300 prizes such as electronic items.

Ranjit Singh said invitations had been sent to various organisations, including other higher learning institutions.

The registration fee is RM5 per person for the schoolboys and girls categories and RM10 for the others.

Entry forms are available from Jaya Catering outlets in the northern region, AIMST University and from AIMST’s website at www.aimst.edu.my. For details, call Ranjit at 012-4623138. The closing date for entries is Oct 30.

The activities to be held in conjunction with the run include a food and fun fair which will start at 8.30am, a Sunquick jigsaw puzzle challenge for children, a go-kart event, a super bike show, a shooting range, games, pony rides and stage performances.

The Star is the official media for the event which is organised with the collaboration of the Central Kedah Athletics Association.

I will post again once i receive the registration form. Meanwhile maybe 2007 report could warming you up.
