Result: 8th Kedah Invitational Swimming Championships

From: Ravindran Renganathan

To All,

Warmest greetings from Persatuan Renang Amatur Kedah.

Firstly, on behalf of Persatuan Renang Amatur Kedah, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for promoting this event. Your direct or indirect involvement has been a great help in achieving an overwhelming response of 322 participants.

This year we had our special guest from the Bangkok Christian College Swimming Club. Their participation has boosted our event to an international level. Most clubs were very appreciative of international level of participation as they strongly believe it to be a positive and healthy competitive environment for their swimmers.

Secondly, I humbly apologise in the event of any shortcomings or hiccups on PRAK's part during the 2 days meet. Our individual mannerism might have offended any one individual person but as a whole, the association's goal was to ensure the success of the Championship. Any such error was unintentional and our humble and sincere apology is extended to all team managers, coaches, parents & swimmers and hoping for it to be accepted in the kindred spirit of sportsmanship.

Please find the overall results attached.

Finally, the time has come for me to bid all adieu. Personally, it had been a wonderful 2 days for me. I thank the Almighty for having given me the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones.

Till we meet again.

Thank you, Terima Kasih, XieXie, Nandri and GOD Bless

Ravindran

Report: Starwalk Penang 2011

Date: 18 September 2011 | Sunday | 7:15am
Venue: Penang Times Square
Distance: 6km (non-competition)

My company sponsored 4 unit of motorcycles as grand prize for lucky draw, in return they gave free slot for staffs who interested. I registered under 10km walk competition category others non-competition. With 10 participants plus a few more as booth assistants, we stay at Sunway Hotel. Only 100m to starting line - Time Square, Penang.

Earlier night in hotel room, i realized they pick-up only t'shirt and register coupon - no bib# for me. Calling and trying to get bib#.. no help. Then I tepuk dahi... Danny my running friend at Bandar Laguna Merbok texted me and offered his bib# 2 days ago but I declined.

So @6:30am, I was watching the flag-off of competition category from my hotel room :(

I changed to non-competition and took a wrist-band at registration counter. I met some SP runners friends whom I not seen for long time. Then I meet-up with my secondary school friend, ex-company old friend and regular running friends. Yeah! I thinks not bad taking non-competition category...

I was standing in middle of the crowd. Nearly 20,000 participants. The largest ever participants in Starwalk. Can not do race walk. Just small step of walking and sembang2.

Seem I'm in non-competition... I was thinking about running.

I ran until Padang Kota Lama (Esplanade) then got passport stamped. Previously Starwalk start/finish at PISA, Bayan Baru. To celebrate Penang city in UNESCO's World Heritage list, TheStar bring back the start-up location to Georgetown.

For 6km non-competition, we required to walk passing at least 19 heritage building in Georgetown and get 9 stamped on small booklet/passport of each heritage building visited. Some of them including the E&O Hotel, Town Hall, City Hall, Fort Cornwallis, St George's Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque.

I got only 2 chopped. The rest.. I just ran and site seeing. Ran in busy road of Penang early morning.. Syiok. Macam raja jalan.

@Finished line, there were free flow of drinks and cereals. My stomach full of milo, 100Plus, Sunquick and Nestle cereals. And to cut short this report I'm not a lucky draw winner...hmmm

..and congrats to Aiman Cheah, the 7th winner in Men Jr. Veteran category. Read his report here.

Some photos from my friend's cam and official result.

News: Patrick Makau sets new marathon world-record time of 2hr 03min 38sec

Kenya's Patrick Makau set a new world record as he successfully defended the Berlin marathon title, with the former record holder Haile Gebrselassie dramatically stopping for a minute during the race.

Makau clocked a stunning unofficial time of 2hr 03min 38sec , 21 seconds quicker than the time set by Gebrselassie over the same course in 2008.

Gebrselassie stepped off the road after 27km and looked like he wanted to vomit as he doubled over in pain, but after a minute he gingerly made his way back on to the course and continued running.

The race organisers then appeared to ask one of the pacemakers to wait for Gebrselassie to pace him back into the race, but the 38-year-old had no chance of catching Makau.

The 26-year-old had been under world-record pace throughout the race and never faded, even after losing the last of the six pacemakers.

Report: Penang Starwalk 2011

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 18 September 2011 | Sunday | 6:30am
Venue: Penang Times Square
Distance: 10km Category: Men Junior Veteran
Position: 7
Time: 1:11:57

Very lucky indeed to be able to get a medal. I have been struggling with my form after a long rest. I was very much off the pace in my training since 4 September. On 11 September I only managed to clock 2:45 per lap at MPSJ stadium.

I guessed my ex-student had lifted my morale. I was training on Friday afternoon. She stopped me to share a good news. She will be called to the Bar this Friday. This batch of students are really fantastic. Last year, I met two - one a pilot for Airasia and another a mechatronic engineer. The best part is she offered to give me a lift… I thought I suppose to work out for the final preparation for this race.

Penang Starwalk participants gathering in front of Penang Times Square before the flag-off. Some 20,000 people turned up for the event yesterday, making it the biggest ever. Source - thestar.com.my

I am not sure if the new location is better than PISA. I find it very difficult to get near the starting line for the start. I was held up for quite some time before able to make my move. Perhaps, I would have done slightly better if I had the opportunity to be on pole!

Oh, I also met my host, En. Haris. I thought he took part in the race too. He went on the capacity of the company representative.

This is my first time going to Penang on Firefly. Thanks to my colleague who managed to book me the ticket when firefly offered RM0.01 fare! I took Metrobus from Pasar Seni which cost me RM2.50 to Subang Airport. Cheaper and faster going to Penang compared to going by bus.

Thanks to Mr Aplaidoo for arranging the accommodation and I still owe Mr Suresh for the room...

Report: Giant Kids Run

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 16 September 2011
Venue: Metropolitan Park, Kepong
Category / Time / Distance:
4-6 years old / 7.30 a.m. / 700m (Akmal)
7-8 years old / 8.00 a.m. / 1600m (Afiqah)

A good event for children. More of the side events rather than the run itself.

I think the race is not 'fair' as there were too many participants. The running route was narrow. Naturally, the ones starting at the back would be very badly disadvantaged. I took care of Akmal and my wife was the manager for Afiqah.

Perhaps, it would be better if the organizer divided the participants into a few starts… the event would take a longer time but then I think it would be safer. I was told that there were a few participants who had bad fall espeically the older kids. There was no bad incidents in the 4-6 category. Kids are young and the stakes are low.

Akmal enjoyed the race but what he enjoyed most was the pony ride. In fact he went for the second round with his sister!

Report: Breakfast Run @ PACM Permaisuri Group

By Aiman Cheah

Date : 4 Sept 2011 (Sunday) | 7:00am (flag-off)
Venue: Taman Tasik Permaisuri
Distance: 1 or 2 loops of 4.2km each loop

It has been ages since I last participated in a breakfast run. This time I overbought the tickets because my colleagues were unsure of participating. Anyway, at RM5 it does not really burn the pocket... well, something for PACM if they could not make it.

True enough, there were no takers. My students get their own tickets from the Permaisuri group. I thought I was early that day but found that the parking lots were full. PACM members will always be super early…

This is the first time that my family members really complete the distance! Looking forward for more events like this.

Photobucket
Afiqah was one of the lucky winners. Thanks to Brooks – a t-shirt, a pair of socks and a RM120 voucher for international shoes. Picture courtesy of www.facebook.com/pages/Malaysia-Runners

I was lucky too as I got a goodie bag with energizer charger, disposable razor and other things.

My wife got an umbrella. Akmal was not lucky… over all 3 out of 4 won the luckly draw. Umm with the other two tickets, the percentage was still good 3 out of 6.

Another lucky day as there was not toll collection on that day.
